ST. LOUIS — A total of 97 mixed colored Labrador Retrievers were rescued Tuesday by the Humane Society of Missouri from an unlicensed breeder in Phelps County.
Humane Society workers had previously rescued 83 dogs from that same property in late 2019 and early 2020, according to a Facebook post.
The 97 labs include adults and puppies and are receiving medical treatment at the shelter. They are currently safe, warm and surrounded by loving staff.
The rescue came after Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey's office got emergency court relief againt the Sandra Kozlowski of Sho-Me Labradors for violating state standards for commerical dog breeders. The AG's office says she violated the by keeping too many dogs, letting her breeder's license lapse and keeping dogs in crates with an "appaling" lack of space without access to water.
Kozlowski must pay $5,000 of suspended penalities from the original judgement as well as relinquish all but 10 dogs. She is also banned from advertising the sale of dogs from Sho-Me Labs, wich a few exceptions, according to the court order.
The Humane Society is seeking donations of blankets, towels, toys and newspapers. There also is an Amazon wish list for donations.
The rescued dogs will be posted on the Humane Society’s website when they are ready for adoption.
