ST. LOUIS—Missouri State Rep. Sarah Unsicker, a Shrewsbury Democrat running for Attorney General, has been removed from her legislative committees and faces calls for her resignation amid accusations tied to her social media use.
House Minority Leader Rep. Crystal Quade, D-Springfield, made the announcement Thursday night that suggested Unsicker’s status as a member of the House Democratic Caucus was also in doubt.
“During her time in the legislature, Rep. Sarah Unsicker has proven a strong advocate for society’s vulnerable, especially children,” Quade, a candidate for governor said. “Recently, however, she has chosen to use social media to promote individuals who espouse baseless conspiracies and racist and anti-Semitic ideologies that are antithetical to the values of inclusiveness, tolerance and respect House Democrats are dedicated to upholding. As a result, I am removing Rep. Unsicker from all committees as the process of evaluating her future as a member of the House Democratic Caucus begins.”
In a thread of posts on X, formerly known as Twitter, Unsicker shared a photo of herself with Charles Johnson and Eric Garland. The Washington Post reported Johnson had been banned from Twitter in 2015 over asking for funds to “take out” an activist in the civil unrest in Ferguson after the shooting death of Michael Brown. Garland has claimed to be a federal informant on national security.
Amid pushback to her posts, on Dec. 6, Unsicker said on X “I'm not planning to forever ignore the accusations forever. But addressing false statements about me is lower in my priority list than the work I do for you.”
“I am confused by the statement that I have ‘promoted individuals’ who espouse ‘baseless conspiracy theories’. I have not been offered any explanation of how my behavior was different from my typical behavior, including my refusal to respond to slanderous representations of others,” Unsicker said after Quade’s announcement Thursday.
Unsicker said both Johnson and Garland were federal informants.
Elad Gross, Unsicker’s opponent in the Democratic primary for Attorney General, has called for her to resign from her House seat and to withdraw from the race. Due to term limits, Unsicker is entering her final legislative session starting next month. Ray Reed, a Democrat running to succeed her in the House, has also called for her resignation.
