ST. LOUIS—SSM Health is building a new Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital to replace the nearly 70-year-old facility.

The state-of-the-art hospital will be at Chouteau Ave. and Grand Blvd, near the current facility. The health system says the new facility will fulfill the need for highly specialized neonatal and pediatric services. 

SSM Health says while the existing hospital has served the community well, it’s plans will incorporate in patient-and family-centered design.

The proposed facility will be 14-stories with more than 200 inpatient beds. There will also be larger areas to accommodate families. 

 “This investment will ensure we’re able to continue meeting the evolving needs of our community’s most vulnerable infants, children and adolescents for future generations,” said Laura S. Kaiser, FACHE, President and CEO of SSM Health, in a press release. 

The health system also says this is a signal of its continued commitment to investing in St. louis City. 

The construction of a new pediatric academic hospital furthers SSM Health’s commitment to establishing a premier academic medical campus on Grand Avenue. A new SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital opened in 2020.

The new Cardinal Glennon will allow for expanded and enhanced services including NICU, ICU, cancer, cardiology and dialysis care. 

Hossain Marandi, MD, MBA, FACHE, President of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, said the health system is “devoted to building a healthier, brighter future.”

“Together, we have an opportunity to envision the transformation of pediatric health care in the region, to serve more children and families who are depending on us, and further solidify our position as a national leader in caring for kids,” said Marandi in a press release.

Construction of the new hospital is expected to be complete in 2027. St. Louis-based McCarthy Building Companies will be the general contractor on the project.
