ST. LOUIS—Missouri’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education on Wednesday announced the launch of a $25 million grant program starting next week that would give applying students in the state’s public and charter schools up to $1,500 for education expenses.

While any public or charter school student is eligible to apply for the program, which is funded in the 2024 state budget, the first priority for the “Close The Gap” grants will go towards families who live at or below 185% of the federal poverty level.

The funds could buy classroom materials, computer equipment, internet access, tutoring, before-and after-school educational programs, academic day or summer camps among other uses.

The application process opens Sept. 20, 2023 and closes Oct. 25. The state is working with Odyssey, a tech company that promises a portal similar to shopping at an online retailer.

Users will need to register an account with Odyssey and provide some sensitive information to help confirm eligibility. Funds expire June 1, 2024.

The program will also allow for reimbursement of relevant services and products purchased since July 1, 2022, but applicants will need to have a picture of their receipt, and if it’s a tangible product, a picture that includes a model number.

“Close the Gap is another way to support our mission to provide students access to opportunities," said Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven in a news release. “In partnership with Odyssey, we are providing families a platform to search for and purchase the resources, tools, and enrichment their student needs to be successful inside and outside of the classroom.”

The Missouri General Assembly approved $50 million for the program, but Gov. Parson vetoed half the amount in June.
