ST. LOUIS—One day after releasing a launch video for her campaign to become the next governor of the state of Missouri, House Minority Floor Leader Crystal Quade, D-Springfield, met the media Monday morning in her hometown. She could be in St. Louis sometime Tuesday.
Quade’s launch video emphasized a life story that featured growing up on food stamps and being the first in her family to graduate from high school. She’s hoping voters see a contrast to a GOP field that includes Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, the son of a former governor (Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft), and Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe, a former car dealership owner who now owns a farm.
Ashcroft was the only Republican named in the video.
Kehoe, the St. Louis native who grew up the son of a single mother, took issue with the contrast.
“I never met my dad, and my single mom worked three jobs to raise six kids. We had no money. I didn’t make excuses. My siblings and I had to work hard to support my mom and we earned the opportunity to achieve the American Dream,” Kehoe said in a twitter post that included his own campaign video, which offered its own contrast to Ashcroft’s life story.
In a mocking social media post on Monday, State Sen. Bill Eigel, R-Weldon Spring, who remains in an exploratory phase of a campaign for Governor, suggested Kehoe was in the wrong party’s primary.
The Ashcroft campaign hasn’t issued any statement or social media posts regarding the Quade news, but on Monday did point to recent polling that shows a large lead in a three-way GOP primary.
A Remington Research Group poll conducted July 5-7 and commissioned by the political news site Missouri Scout, asked who voters would choose in the Republican Primary if the election were held today. Ashcroft came out on top at 34% with Kehoe at 14% and Eigel at 4%, with 48% still undecided.
