ST. LOUIS — Actress and St. Louis native Jenna Fischer revealed a “scandalous” tidbit about how she would rather have a Dairy Queen Blizzard over a concrete from Ted Drewes in a new episode of a podcast called “The Flaky Biscuit.”
Shondaland Audio’s newest podcast is hosted by Bryan Ford where each episode features him cooking or baking his guest’s favorite or memorable meal as he asks questions about their success, struggles and more.
Ford is an artisan baker who also hosts Magnolia Network’s “Baked in Tradition,” and the “The Artisan’s Kitchen.”
Fischer is a guest on the latest episode of “The Flaky Biscuit” where she dishes about local cuisine from Imo’s Pizza, Provel, toasted ravioli, to pork steaks, her preferences on custard, and the “sticky glaze” of St. Louis style barbecue.
Growing up in St. Louis, Fischer graduated from Nerinx Hall High School and received a B.A. in theater from Truman State University. She is best known for playing Pam on NBC’s hit TV show “The Office.”
On the podcast, Fischer shared a story of when she and her family learned that pork steaks are more of a St. Louis region delicacy. When her parents visited Fischer in Los Angeles, her dad suggested getting pork steaks for him to grill.
After asking the butcher, Fischer said the butcher gave her a blank face.
“He’s like ‘Pork chop?’ I’m like, ‘No, it’s not a pork chop, it’s a pork steak,’ ” Fischer said. “I called my dad and my dad’s like, ‘Jenna, this is not a hard task!’ ” she said with a laugh.
Frustrated, her dad went to ask the butcher himself.
“I remember him coming back to my apartment being like, ‘Yeah, they don’t have them here,’ and I’m like ‘I know!’ ” Fischer said.
Pork steaks are cut from the shoulder of a pig.
“You put that on a grill and then you put barbecue sauce on it and it’s so good,” Fischer said.
She mentioned that St. Louis also is known for its frozen custard from the well-known establishment Ted Drewes.
“I’m going to say something very scandalous right now. This might get me kicked out of St. Louis,” Fischer said. “I prefer just a Dairy Queen Blizzard.”
She said frozen custard is “a little too thick to me or something, or very dairy forward. I barely like custard as a dessert anyway, so to then freeze it and add a Snickers to it, that’s a lot for me.”
