SPRINGFIELD, Ill.–Several Metro East first responders were honored Tuesday for their heroic efforts during the 30th Annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial and Medal of Honor Ceremony.
Belleville firefighters Ryan Mahoney and Alex Kuhl received the Medal of Honor for saving the life of toddler Malcom Tompkins during a January 2022 house fire.
Also, Belleville Engineer John Eachus received the Medal of Valor award and Capt. Joe Garland and firefighter Michael Schwent received the Firefighter Excellence Award for their heroic acts on the night of Nov. 11, 2022.
Collinsville firefighter Jason Warner was awarded the Medal of Honor during yesterday’s ceremony for his part in rescuing a woman from a vehicle submerged in icy water in February 2022.
Several firefighters from the Highland Park Fire Department were honored for their role in the July 4th Highland Park massacre.
Gov. JB Pritzker and the State Fire Marshal James A Rivera were on hand for the ceremony.
“On behalf of the State of Illinois, thank you for your service—we couldn’t be more grateful,” said Pritzker.
