ST. LOUIS–Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright will not start the 2023 season opener at Busch Stadium next Thursday. He won’t start the season on the active roster either, that's according to MLB.com.
Manager Oliver Marmol told reporters at Spring Training in Jupiter that Wainwright has a groin strain and will start the season on the injured list with a groin injury. John Denton, the MLB.com reporter says Marmol said the veteran pitcher is likely to miss "several weeks" after suffering the injury in the weight room Tuesday prior to Team USA's game in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) championship game.
Wainwright last pitched Sunday when he gave up one run on five hits in four innings in a win against Cuba in the WBC.
At Busch Stadium Wednesday afternoon during a media tour to highlight the 2023 season, all signs still pointed to the idea that Wainwright, who has announced this will be his final season before retiring, would be the man on the mound.
Wainwright, 41, was 11-12 with a 3.71 ERA in 2022. He struggled down the stretch of the season and has said on social media it was due to a flaw in his pitching mechanics brought on by being hit in the knee by a batted ball against Atlanta in August.
The team has not indicated who would be in line to start the home opener March 30 at Busch Stadium against the Toronto Blue Jays.
