ST. LOUIS–Two days after FOX News host Tucker Carlson began airing portions of security footage from the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol that bipartisan critics say is an attempt to rewrite history, Missouri U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley said House Speaker Kevin McCarthy should release all the footage, and accused the House Committee that investigated the events surrounding that day of manipulating the footage it put out as part of its probe.
Monday night, Carlson claimed that the widely viewed video of Hawley running in the halls of the Capitol was “a sham” because the committee didn’t show that Hawley was one of several lawmakers ushered to safety by Capitol Police.
Earlier on Jan. 6, Hawley was pictured giving a raised fist to demonstrators who were at the Capitol in support of former President Donald Trump, who falsely claimed he had won the 2020 election.
“I was there that day. I can tell you I'm not afraid of any of it coming out. Release all of it. Let everybody see it, and I'm glad Tucker's reporting on it. I hope there'll be a lot more,” Hawley said.
"The committee used altered video...just take my case where they took video, changed it, scrubbed it. Cut it and then introduced fake narration over it, that's what they did over and over to try and paint a picture that everybody who came to Washington DC--this is the essential narrative they put out there--that if you came to Washington DC on that day, you're a domestic terrorist," Hawley said. “The vast majority of people who came to DC on that day were here peacefully. They were protesting peacefully and they're right to do so," he said.
"The people who did commit violence, and the video shows that too–the people who did commit violence they ought to be prosecuted. Absolutely 100 %,” Hawley said. “I don't care what the rationale was, they should be prosecuted. But that's not the narrative that the committee–the so-called committee put forward,” Hawley said.
According to the Justice Department, at least 1,000 people have been arrested in connection with the riot and about 140 police officers were assaulted. In all, more than 570 people have so far been convicted of crimes related to Jan. 6. Some individuals connected to the attack have been convicted of sedition.
Lucas Kunce, Hawley’s only declared 2024 Democratic opponent in the race for his Senate seat called the Carlson narrative an effort at damage control.
“I think what we've seen here related to him in this campaign is that he's built this persona for years that he's a fighter and that footage absolutely shattered that persona,” he said. “Now he and Tucker Carlson, who coordinates with Republicans, are trying to do damage control basically, but there's no real damage control you can do over this. I mean, this is the Show Me state. He showed us what he's all about.
Multiple news organizations have requested access to the Jan. 6 footage.
