ST. LOUIS–Police are warning about a crime trend involving thefts at gas stations that are largely targeting women.

St. Louis County Police say it has received numerous reports of thefts from vehicles at gas stations in its South St. Louis County and Affton precincts.

The department says in each case, a female victim was pumping gas with her purse in the front passenger seat.

Police say a suspect in a stolen vehicle pulls up next to the victim’s car, opens the passenger door, and steals the purse. Officers say often, the victim didn’t even realize it happened.

The department wants people to be vigilant and are offering this advice:

  • Keep your purse with you at all times

  • Lock your vehicle if you must go inside the gas station or convenience store

  • Do not leave your car unlocked or running while unattended
