ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo.–Roads around St. Louis are slushy Wednesday morning and MoDOT is advising people delay travel if possible. Heavy snow started falling around 3 a.m. with areas to the south seeing more snow.
As of 6 a.m., MoDOT says some of the lower volume roads had not been cleared yet. MoDOT advises drivers add time to their commute if they have to hit the roads.
The Missouri Highway Patrol says there have only been a few minor crashes and reports of cars sliding off the roads. Trooper Dallas Thompson thanked drivers who listened and avoided the roads.
Bob Becker, MoDOT District Maintenance Engineer said they decided not to pretreat the roads since the storm started as rain and road temperatures were above freezing at the time. The rain also held out a little longer than expected, so crews had less snow to tackle.
St. Louis County Transportation Department is reporting that pavement conditions are generally good with some slick spots.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol urged drivers to be prepared with a topped-off tank of gas, water, blankets and extra phone chargers, in the event of accidents that could lead to lengthy delays.
In the event of a spinout that sends cars off the road, authorities say people should not get outside their vehicle.
“We want you to remain inside there because you ended up off the road because you hit a slick spot. Chances are somebody else is gonna hit that same spot and they may end up in the exact same spot you ended up so you’re gonna be a lot safer inside your vehicle than if you were standing out near your vehicle,” Trooper Logan Bolton told reporters.
