ST. LOUIS– The community will get a chance to honor the life and legacy of Demetrious Johnson, the former NFL and Mizzou player, who died of complications from a rare heart condition on Dec. 24 at the age of 61.

Johnson also touched many lives through his work with the Demetrious Johnson Charitable Foundation and other community causes.

A memorial celebration will be held Jan. 2 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Chaifetz Arena on the SLU campus. There will be a procession from the Demetrious Johnson Foundation Center to the arena before the memorial.

Johnson’s family released a statement through the foundation, extending “it’s heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of condolences” since their loved one’s death.

Johnson, a St. Louis native,  played four years with the Detroit LIons and one year with the Miami Dolphins. He also won a full athletic scholarship to the University of Missouri to play football.
