ST. LOUIS–Several water main breaks have popped up across St. Louis and Missouri American Water says this often happens after the first extended cold snap.

One main break has southbound Hanley Blvd. between Maryland and Bonhomme in Clayton closed until at least tomorrow. St. Louis County Department of Transportation says the burst main has severely damaged the road’s pavement. It also says Missouri American Water is having difficulty getting hot asphalt which it needs to repair the damage.

According to Missouri American Water’s alert page, there are at least 18 spots undergoing emergency repairs and one of those also has a Boil Water Advisory. You can check the interactive map to find alerts in your neighborhood or to report a problem.

The water company also says when you can see ice floating on nearby rivers, that water is cold and main breaks are more likely. IDOT posted pictures of ice on the Illinois River, forcing the closure of some ferries.

Temperatures are expected to rise into the 40s Wednesday and close to 60 degrees on Thursday, so there may be more water main breaks later this week.
