ST. LOUIS–Several weeks after Hazelwood school board members heard results from a third set of radiation testing involving Jana Elementary, the body approved an administrative request to ask the federal government for a fresh round of testing, this time covering all district property.

The move was approved by the board at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting.

  • Two of three tests of Jana Elementary show there is no radioactive contamination on the property. A Boston Chemical Data Corporation test found significant contamination

  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it has not received a formal request about additional testing

The recommendation comes along with a move to "secure financial support for any and all related radioactive contamination costs to the District."

The request comes a little more than a month since board members heard the results of a third set of testing performed at Jana Elementary School, in Florissant. The third test showed no concerns of radioactive waste and backed up the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ belief that the school is safe for students.

Boston Chemical Data Corporation, which authored the second report from August with testing results on the school site that said it found significant radioactive contamination.

Spectrum News reached out to the U.S. Army Corps, which says it has not received a formal request from the school district to test all of its properties for radioactive contamination.

Ahead of the vote, an Army Corps spokesperson told Spectrum  if evidence is presented for a need to expand sampling and testing, it will take appropriate actions.
