ST. LOUIS – More than 166 million people are expected to shop during the five-day Black Friday weekend, an increase of eight million from the previous year, according to the National Retail Federation.

On Nov. 26, Small Business Saturday falls within that time period. In the midst of a recession, American Express created Small Business Saturday in 2010 to encourage people to shop small and bring business to area small businesses.

The shopping day, the Saturday following Thanksgiving, often has shops offering sales and promotions to draw foot traffic.

Here are some of the places participating:

Central West End: Starting at 10 a.m., businesses throughout the neighborhood will offer special promotions including free donuts and hot cocoa at some locations. There will also be street performers, carolers and more. You can find a list of all the discounts and promotions here.

South Grand: Small Business Saturday Tree Lighting Ceremony in Ritz Park (3147 South Grand). There will be free hot cocoa, S’mores and carols.

City Foundry: Ten local shops will be on hand to offer specials for patrons. Some vendors will be offering free mimosas and music. Check out the event’s site to find a list of the vendors.
