ST. LOUIS–A new poll shows Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt continues to hold a double-digit lead over Trudy Busch Valentine in the race for the U.S. Senate.
The Emerson College Polling/The Hill Missouri poll was conducted September 23-27, 2022 and shows the Republican, Schmitt, with a 49%-38% lead over Busch Valentine, the Democrat in the race. Three percent would vote for another candidate and 10% were undecided. The poll’s margin of error is 2.7%
Several recent polls have shown Schmitt with an 11 point edge in the race to succeed Roy Blunt, who decided not to seek a new term.
Schmitt, a former State Senator from the St. Louis area, has campaigned on taking “a blowtorch” to Biden administration policy. Earlier this week, he filed suit in federal court against the federal government’s student loan forgiveness plan. Busch Valentine, an Anheuser-Busch heir and nurse, has campaigned heavily on protecting abortion rights and since the primary, has focused on Schmitt’s State Senate support for legislation that allowed foreign entities to own Missouri farmland.
The major party candidates have yet to commit to appear in the same general election debate or candidate forum.
The same poll also asked about the race for the White House in 2024. Former President Donald Trump topped President Joe Biden by a 51-37% margin, with 7% choosing another candidate and 5% undecided.
The poll showed support for Amendment 3, the constitutional amendment to legalize marijuana that in some cases would also free certain offenders and also expunge criminal records. Forty-nine percent of those polled were in favor, with 35% opposed and 16% unsure.
Absentee voting for the November 8 general election opened this past week.
