LITCHFIELD, Ill. – A building collapse during a bridal shower has prompted the cancellation of a weekend event due to structural concerns in the area. The collapse happened at an historic brick building on State Street in downtown Litchfield Saturday morning. City officials say the Pickers Market on August 14 has been canceled out of an abundance of caution.
Twenty people were inside the building when part of the roof and second floor collapsed. Several people had minor injuries and some had to go to the hospital to be checked out.
Several buildings along State Street are now uninhabitable, according to a Facebook post by the Litchfield Fire Department. One lane of traffic is also closed in the area.
The structural engineers have not been on site yet to give an assessment and the city says the condition of the buildings in the area is still not known and the weather could also impact the structure.
"Again, we know that the decision will be criticized either way, but we want to respect our vendors by giving as much notice as possible and protecting the public's safety," said Mayor Steve Dougherty. "We are thankful that everyone got out safely, and understand it was a very traumatic situation for those involved."
Officials say public safety is their main concern and keeping the area clear of pedestrians and vendors is best. An alternate space was considered but the City wishes to be sensitive to those affected due to the incident and of business closures.
