JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – There is more than $1 billion of unclaimed property waiting to be reunited with Missourians. The state treasurer says his office is breaking records returning the unclaimed property to its rightful owners.
Treasurer Scott Fitzpatrick’s office returned more than $50 million to Missourians during the fiscal year that ended June 30. It’s the first time the office returned more than $50 million in a fiscal year. It also returned unclaimed property to 233,769 Missourians, more than any year prior.
“These record-breaking accomplishments are a reflection of this hard work and the dedicated staff in my office,” said Fitzpatrick.
Auction
And for the first time since 2019, the treasurer’s office is holding an Unclaimed Property Auction. It contains items that were in safety deposit boxes and were later turned over to the state. Due to limited storage space, the treasurer’s office holds an annual auction where non-monetary materials of value are sold to the highest bidder.
The items include jewelry, stamps, books including one of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, knives, and more. The auction is in Kansas City July 18-19. You can check out the Auction Lot Book here.

The Treasurer’s Office also holds more than 250 military medals and insignia that have been found in safe deposit boxes. Photos and information about the last known owner can be found on ShowMeMoney.com/medals.
