ST. LOUIS — Missouri drivers are seeing the largest drop in gas prices so far this year.
AAA has reported the new average price per gallon for regular unleaded gas statewide is $4.47, which is 10 cents less compared to this time last week.
In the St. Louis area, drivers are paying an average of $4.60 per gallon of regular unleaded gas. In Jefferson City, drivers are paying the most on average at $4.70 and drivers in Joplin are paying the least at $4.25 per gallon, according to a press release by AAA.
Decreasing crude oil prices because of concerns about a decline in global demand and an increased regional supply are the main factors behind the drop in gas prices.
It is uncertain whether the decline in gas prices is a trend or another round of price fluctuation, according to the press release.
“The largest weekly decline in 2022 for fuel prices is good news for drivers, but we’re not out of the woods just yet,” AAA Spokesperson Nick Chabarria said. “Gas prices will remain elevated compared to one year ago and could fluctuate in July, which is typically one of the highest months for fuel demand.”
At the beginning of July, Missouri’s gas tax increased from 19.5 cents to 22 cents per gallon. That rate has been planned to increase seven cents over the next three years.
Missourians can request a refund of the increased gas tax for highway and non-highway purposes. The Missouri Department of Revenue is developing a system for customers to file a claim and receive approved refunds online.
