WENTZVILLE, Mo. — At least three homes caught fire Sunday night in Wentzville after fireworks severely damaged two homes.
Firefighters responded to a subdivision on Woods Mill Drive where two houses were on fire. Wentzville Fire Deputy Chief Michael Scott said there were no civilian injuries, but one firefighter was transported to a hospital for heat related issues.
The American Red Cross is helping the victims.
In St. Louis City, between July 4-5, the St. Louis Fire Department received 574 calls for service, which included 232 EMS calls, and the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) logged 144 fires, according to Dan Isom, director of the Public Safety Department.
There were 264 calls for service related to fireworks from 5 p.m. July 2 through midnight July 5.
In 2021, St. Louis Fire Department received 499 calls for service that included 214 EMS calls and SLMPD logged 106 fires. There also were 324 calls for service related to fireworks, according to Isom.
In 2020, there were 572 calls for service that included 264 EMS calls and 122 fires. Isom said there were 931 calls for service related to fireworks.
Isom said the downtown firework celebration was peaceful with no incidents, however, two victims were shot in separate incidents early Tuesday morning.
A group was standing on the sidewalk at the corner of 8th and Market streets at 1:45 a.m. where they heard gunshots from an unknown direction. One person was shot and was taken to a hospital.
Around 4 a.m., a man sustained gunshot wounds to his abdomen after he asked a group to stop setting off fireworks on the corner 9th and Pine streets. Multiple witnesses reported being shot at, but only one victim had injuries. He is in stable condition, Isom said.
