ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo.—St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright shows no signs of slowing down on the mound this season, and the same is true for Wainwright’s work supporting charitable efforts in St. Louis and around the world.
On Sunday June 12, Wainwright’s Big League Impact holds “Swinging For Impact” at TopGolf in Chesterfield, sponsored by 101ESPN, RTP Outdoors, American Standard Heating and Air Conditioning, Anna and Matt McDonald and Spectrum Reach.
According to Big League Impact’s website:
“You will enjoy an evening of camaraderie and competition alongside your favorite Cardinals players and other celebrities. Individual tickets start at $250, or $400 for a pair of golfers. Each ticket includes golf with a Cardinals player and other celebrities, food, beer and wine. There will also be a cash bar available for additional drinks. Sponsorships are available for $2,500 for a half bay (three golfers) and $5,000 for a full bay (five golfers and two guests).”
The registration deadline is June 6 and can be done here.
“TopGolf is amazing by itself playing with your least favorite people in the world but hopefully playing with us you're gonna have a good team you’re gonna get to play TopGolf obviously but you’re gonna get to play with us and we’re going to have a good time together,” Wainwright told Spectrum News. “We’re gonna compete, we’re gonna try to beat you, so it’s just a good time hanging out and a good time of comaraderie. A lot of questions get asked during that time if there’s anything you want to know, bring it on.”
The one question Wainwright has told reporters he won’t address during the season is whether this is his last on the mound. Teammates Yadier Molina and Albert Pujols have already announced their retirement once the 2022 season ends.
Whenever that comes for Wainwright, he says he’s ready to ramp up efforts to feed people and provide clean drinking water around the world.
“I have a farm in South Georgia where we help to feed a lot of different people...we pour into a lot of restaurants we give back to a lot of the basic community outreach places that have food programs and I think the idea is to scale that way up so that we can help more and more people down there in Southeast Georgia but to go and see places is still where my heart is....when we do projects I want to go see what we did, make sure that its good. When we go to Haiti, we go to Honduras, we go to the Dominican, I want to drink the water we gave them to make sure that it’s good. If it’s not good enough for me to drink, it’s not good enough for them to drink. That kind of work never stops I don’t think it’ll ever stop....hope it never stops.”
We couldn’t resist asking some quick-hitting golf questions about Wainwright’s current and former baseball teammates.
Who wins a longest drive contest?
“Nobody’s hitting the ball farther than me, that’s just the truth of the matter but the guy that I’ve seen that’s closest is Jon Lester. Jon Lester could really hit the ball pretty far. Smooth lefty swing, ball had incredible carry, just like when he pitched. Mark Mulder was really a great golfer too....didn’t hit it as far, but a lot straighter than me, I’ll tell you that.”
Who wins the Charles Barkley award for ugliest swing? Matt Carpenter.
“He plays right handed, so I have to give him some credit. He’s a lefty swinger but he doesn’t want to mess his baseball swing up, but he can hit a ball full swing, 200 yards, which is not great by the way, for a professional athlete only to be able to hit a ball 200 yards with a driver is not great but he hits it 200 yards forward but he starts the ball about 70 yards left and he can slice the ball around a building and get it back to the fairway. Now he plays it pretty accurately, which is frustrating at times because I give him a lot of strokes per nine. I give him like 5 strokes per nine, and he hits this giant, giant slice, but it’s ugly...it’s not a good swing...he swears it’s getting better every time and just isn’t.”
Wainwright says pitcher Miles Mikolas should avoid putting. “Miles is the worst putter you’ve ever seen, He’s this big strong strapping guy but he can’t putt at all, he three-putts every green.”
