ST. LOUIS- For the third time in the past few months, a member of the St. Louis Board of Aldermen has resigned.
John Collins-Muhammad, who represents the city’s 21st ward, announced he would step down, effective Thursday.
“I have made mistakes and I take full responsibility for those mistakes and I am forever sincerely grateful to the residents of the 21st Ward for allowing me this most extraordinary opportunity. I am resigning from my office, not my community,” he shared on social media posts.
“The weeks ahead will be tough. I ask for continued prayers for myself and my family. I apologize to my family and to my constituents for my shortcomings and my mistakes.”
Collins-Muhammad did not immediately respond to requests for comment to elaborate on his announcement.
His resignation follows that of Heather Navarro, from Ward 28 in January and Sarah Wood Martin from Ward 11 in April. Wood Martin, who works as a lobbyist, cited the passage of earlier this spring of Proposition R, which says aldermen cannot serve in positions where their employment could pose a conflict of interest.
On Tuesday, Collins-Muhammad joined three other members of the Board in suing over the proposition.
