ST. LOUIS— It’s a murder that not only captivated St. Louis, but also actress Renée Zellweger . This week, the actress will play Pam Hupp, the local woman now charged with the 2011 murder of her friend, Betsy Faria. The grisly crime scene set off a chain of events that would expose a “diabolical scheme” involving Hupp, according to NBC.
The miniseries, The Thing About Pam, premiered Tuesday, March 8 at 9pm CT on NBC. The TV series comes after the popular 2019 podcast by the same name.
Zellweger joins actors Josh Duhamel, who plays Russ’ defense attorney, Judy Greer, who plays the prosecutor, Katy Mixon, starring as Betsy Faria, and Glenn Fleshler as Russ.
Zellweger told EW.com she first learned about Pam Hupp while driving up and down I-5. She started listening to the podcast while taking her 110-pound German Shepherd Chester to appointments for his hip replacement. Zellweger and her producing partner, Carmella Casinelli, launched their own production company and are producers of the series.
There were a lot of twists and turns in the case. Betsy Faria’s murder did lead to her husband Russ’ conviction. He maintained he didn’t kill her and was later exonerated during a retrial in 2015. Russ Faria blamed Hupp, saying she had a motive after becoming the beneficiary of a $150,000 life insurance policy shortly before Betsy Faria was killed.
In 2016, Hupp was accused of killing 33-year-old Louis Gumpenberger, a mentally disabled man, to distract from the re-invesgtigation of the stabbing death of Betsy Faria.
In 2019, Hupp received life in prison after admitting that prosecutors had enough evidence to convict her of killing Gumpenberger. He wasthe victim of a bizarre plot staged by Hupp to make it look like she was a kidnapping victim acting in self-defense, police said.
Hupp originally told police that she got out of her car on her driveway and Gumpenberger, whom she described as a stranger, pulled a knife and demanded she take him to a bank “to get Russ’s money,” an apparent reference to the insurance money she collected from Betsy Faria’s death.
In July of 2021, Hupp was charged with Betsy’s murder. The Lincoln County Prosecuting Attorney said that after a complete investigation, he came to the conclusion that beyond a reasonable doubt, Hupp killed Faria. Court documents point to Russ Faria’s air-tight alibi, his location based on cell phone records, and lack of other evidence. The prosecutor also says DNA analysis shows blood at the crime scene suggests the killer planted evidence.
