O’FALLON, Mo. — Clean up is underway in an O'Fallon, Missouri neighborhood Wednesday after a home exploded and several others damaged after a fiber internet company struck a gas line earlier this week. Ther fire department says everyone was evacuated from the home and there were no injuries.
A subcontractor for Gateway Fiber was working in the Avondale subdivision when workers struck the line that caused a house to explode, according to O’Fallon Communications Director Tom Drabelle.
After the incident, the company alerted Spire and the O’Fallon Fire Protection District. This is the second gas line that was recently struck within the city by the fiber company, Drabelle said.
The fiber company has voluntarily stopped work within O’Fallon and the city has suspended its work permits.
The O’Fallon Fire Protection District is handling the investigation. The department posted on Facebook a reminder to residents that if you smell gas, leave the area and call 911 immediately. This is also an important reminder to call 1-800-DIG-RITE (344-7483) before you do any digging on your property. They will help you identify gas and other hidden utilities on your property.
