ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. – New housing and commercial construction in St. Charles County are ahead of the pre-pandemic numbers of 2019 while more multi-family units are being built.

What You Need To Know

  • Residential construction permits increased nearly 18% from 2019

  • New housing construction in 2021 was estimated at more than $658 million

  • Multi-family construction is setting new records, offering more housing options for residents

  • St. Charles County Executive says increased housing is important as population is growing

“The year 2021 continued to show St. Charles County as a growth leader in the region and state,” says Director of Community Development Mike Hurlbert.
Total residential permits increased 17.6% over the 2019 numbers and nearly 47% higher than 10 years ago.

While single-family construction has been strong over the last decade, Hurlbert says new records were set in the growth of mutli-family construction in both 2020 and 2021. He says this is providing a wide variety of housing options for residents.

New housing construction in 2021 was estimated at more than $658 million, nearly equal to 2020 and slightly over 2019.

“The growth in housing and commercial construction coincides with the county’s continuing increase in population,” says County Executive Steve Ehlmann.

He says the U.S. Census showed an increase of 12.4% over the past 10 years. The population for the county was 405,262 in 2020. Ehlmann says as people keep moving to the county his administration is focusing on increased housing, attracting new businesses, building and improving infrastructure, and the health and safety of residents.
