A teacher at Cambridge Central Schools is on leave after seventh and eighth grade students were given a handout on transgender education this week that angered many parents in the district.

The handout was distributed Monday to a middle school health class by a guest speaker from the Pride Center of the Capital Region, who was supposed to do another presentation Tuesday, but it was canceled once parents and the district caught word of the content in the packet.

The information about transgender people and proper gender grammar, but it also goes on to define a long list of common terms used in the LGBTQ community and derogatory slurs used against them.

A number of parents took to social media to express concern, saying that a lot of the information was introduced at too young of an age and that parents should be responsible for having these types of discussion with their children.

Cambridge Superintendent Vincent A. Canini said Wednesday that the district approved the guest speaker, but was unaware of content in that packet.

He also released a statement to parents saying in part, "After reviewing the contents of the packet that was distributed, the guest speaker was subsequently uninvited from presenting at Cambridge Central School District."

"In addition, the teacher who invited the guest speaker has been placed on paid administrative leave as is standard procedure while the situation is being reviewed," Canini said.

The Pride Center didn't immediately return a request for comment.
