KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Wednesday was a momentous day for the future of the Kansas City riverfront.

Representatives from the Kansas City Current, Palmer Square Real Estate, and and Port KC broke ground on a $1 billion development that will sit directly adjacent to CPKC Stadium.

The project will include multifamily residential and retail space, and gathering spots along the riverfront. Developers also say there will also be an emphasis on expanding Kansas City’s culinary scene.

At the groundbreaking, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas lamented the city’s multi-decade struggle to first clean up, then develop along the river.

He credits the Kansas City Current ownership for changing the face of the city.

“Maybe sometimes I can be a bit hyperbolic,” he said. “But in a previous conversation I said that Angie and Chris Long are game changers in Kansas City like people like Lamar Hunt and Ewing Kauffman have been.”

Chris Long, who also serves as the Chief Executive Officer for Palmer Square Real Estate, says building the world’s first stadium specifically for women was just the beginning.

“It’s not that often you get the chance to change the face of women sports, to change the face of your city, and change the face of the riverfront. We are working to create the next great neighborhood here in Kansas City, one that will be full of amenities for generations to come.”
