Maine is being hit with a slow-moving winter storm that could drop as much as a foot of snow in some locations statewide.
The National Weather Service predicts more snow will fall tonight. Some locations may also experience sleet and freezing rain, particularly near the coast.
Many state and municipal offices have closed or changed hours in anticipation of the weather. Gov. Janet Mills has ordered all state offices closed today.
“The snow arriving late tonight is expected to make driving hazardous throughout the day tomorrow,” Mills said. “I encourage Maine people to stay safe, plan for extra time if you must travel, and as always, give plenty of room to our plow drivers and emergency first responders as they work to keep us all safe.”
Portland City Hall and all administrative offices will be closed today. Augusta city officials also announced city offices would be closed. City offices in Lewiston and Auburn will have delayed openings. In Gray, officials closed the town office, public library, transfer station and parks and rec today. Dayton offices are also closed.
The cities of Portland, Bangor, Lewiston and Auburn have all issued parking bans for Thursday.
On Twitter, Maine State Police urged motorists to “stay home if you can,” noting that 75 crashes happened on the Maine Turnpike during the last major snowstorm in the state. The speed limit on the Maine Turnpike is reduced to 45 mph.
As of 3 p.m., Central Maine Power and Versant Power, the state’s largest electrical utilities, were not reporting any major outages.
