Get ready to bundle up... Big time!

Arctic air will bring dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills across the northern and eastern U.S. early this week.

What You Need To Know

  • Temperatures will take another dramatic drop early this week

  • Lows will drop near and below zero across parts of Wisconsin and the Northeast

  • Many places will deal with subzero wind chills Monday into Tuesday

Much of the Northeast saw temperatures recover a bit on Sunday, but Monday will feel noticeably colder as Arctic air approaches the region.

This frigid air mass already made its way into the Upper Midwest, where parts of northern Wisconsin woke up to subzero temperatures and wind chills in the -20s and -30s.

The core of this cold air mass will shift eastwards later today into tonight, reaching into the Northeast Tuesday morning. A good portion of Upstate New York and Maine will wake up to subzero temperatures, while New York City and Worcester, Massachusetts will still see lows in the single digits.

If seeing single-digit and subzero temperatures on the thermometer isn't cold enough though, the biting winds should do you in!

The Midwest will deal with the coldest wind chills on Monday, while the Northeast braces for brutal wind chills overnight Monday into Tuesday.

Wind Chill Advisories remain in effect through Monday afternoon across Wisconsin with much of the Northeast under a Wind Chill Warning or Advisory Monday night through Tuesday.

Properly preparing for the polar plunge

With Arctic air approaching, now is the time to prepare for the cold.

Let faucets drip or trickle with hot and cold water overnight to prevent pipes from bursting.

When cold air arrives, remember to dress in plenty of layers and cover as many areas as possible before heading outdoors. Any exposed skin will be subject to frostbite.

And remember to keep those pets warm too! Limit time outdoors and keep them inside as much as possible.

Thankfully, this brutal blast of cold air won't last for long. Near-normal temperatures look to make a comeback by the middle of next week.
