Drivers in the Augusta area will see some delays and detours in March when the state begins work to replace a 90-year-old bridge near the downtown.

The Maine Department of Transportation said Tuesday it plans to replace the Rines Hill Bridge on Water Street that stretches over the Maine Central Railroad. The bridge is near the Hartford Fire Station at the top of Water Street.

Traffic impacts are expected to begin March 13 with daytime lane reductions planned, according to the department. On March 20, a detour will begin, with all traffic headed north reduced to a single lane and southbound traffic rerouted to Winthrop and State streets.

The new traffic pattern will stay in place until spring 2024.

The $5.2 million project will be completed by New England Infrastructure of Hudson, Mass., according to DOT.
