ORONO — The University of Maine won its first Hockey East tournament in more than two decades Friday night, defeating the University of Connecticut 5-2 at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.
The win also marks the sixth tournament title in program history for the Black Bears.
According to UMaine athletics, the Black Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first period, with Lynden Breen and Josh Nadeau scoring less than four minutes apart. With under four minutes to go in the second period, Harrison Scott pushed the lead to 3-0.
Maine will learn its 2025 NCAA Tournament seeding and regional location Sunday.
According to UMaine athletics, The Black Bears are the first team not from the state of Massachusetts to win the Hockey East tournament since Maine in 2004.
Additionally, The Black Bears are now 60-48 all-time in the Hockey East Tournament with a record of 6-9 in the championship game.
