Officials have confirmed that an object underwater near Moose Cove is that of the missing fishing vessel Sudden Impact. A body was found onboard, according to the Department of Marine Resources.
Chester Barrett and his son, Aaron, of South Addison, have been missing since Jan. 18 when they failed to return after sailing onboard Sudden Impact from Edmunds to South Addison.
A search operation with the Coast Guard and Maine Marine Patrol followed.
The Department of Marine Resources announced Tuesday that it had located an object that could have been the missing vessel.
At around 11 p.m. Wednesday, state police and Maine Marine Patrol, working with local fishermen, used a remotely operated underwater vehicle with sonar and a camera to confirm the identity of the Sudden Impact.
“Using the ROV, crews were able to observe what is believed to be the body of an individual on board the vessel,” DMR stated.
Sudden Impact is below 160 feet of water between the towns of Cutler and Lubec, where there is a strong tide.
It was not possible on Saturday to recover the body or the vessel, according to DMR.
“The Maine Marine Patrol will continue to work with family members of the Barretts to determine next steps, including consultation with deep water salvage and recovery experts to determine whether a recovery effort is feasible,” DMR stated.
