Interstate 295 northbound in Gardiner was shut down Wednesday afternoon after a tanker truck collided with a vehicle shielding highway workers.

The crash at mile 49 happened before 1:30 p.m., according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss.

A tanker truck operated by Dube Transport INC of Sidney was traveling northbound when it struck a dump truck operated by the Maine Turnpike Authority, Moss said.

The dump truck was towing a specially designed trailer called a crash attenuator, which was meant to shield workers who were collecting traffic cones.

The tanker truck “traveling in the same lane as the Turnpike workers failed to yield as required by law and move over for the slowed maintenance truck, and crashed directly into the crash attenuator,” Moss said.

The tanker truck rolled over and careened into a cable guardrail, spilling nearly 8,000 gallons of landfill leachate, also called dirty water, according to Moss.

“The Maine Turnpike truck was severely damaged and landed across both northbound highway lanes,” Moss stated. “The driver of the Maine Turnpike truck received minor injuries and was transported to Maine General Hospital in Augusta for treatment.”

The tanker truck’s driver was cited for failing to maintain control of a motor vehicle and failing to yield to a highway maintenance vehicle, according to Moss.

State police were assisted at the scene by Maine Department of Transportation, Maine Turnpike Authority, Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Gardiner police and fire departments, Dube Transport and AC Towing.
