A Clinton man has been charged with murder in connection to the shooting death of a Waterville man, according to officials.

Richard Hatt, 33, has been arrested and is being held at Kennebec County Jail, according to a news release from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss.

Waterville police responded to multiple gunshots at the parking lot of the Mount Joseph rehabilitation and nursing facility on Highwood Street at about 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Police found Stephen Killam, 47, of Fairfield, deceased inside a vehicle.

Local schools had instituted lock-out protocol Tuesday morning, although Moss had later stated there was no danger to the public.

“Witnesses reported seeing a black Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck leaving the scene and were able to provide a license plate number to the officers,” Moss stated in a release Tuesday evening.

Clinton Police Chief Rusty Bell found the pickup driven by Hatt at about 9 a.m. in Clinton, according to Moss.

Moss said Killam and Hatt knew each other.

The chief medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy on Wednesday.

Police are continuing their investigation.
