A New Hampshire man is in custody after allegedly leading police on a slow-speed chase through the Maine town of Acton, where residents attempted a road block, according to police. One resident was arrested after allegedly firing a shotgun at the fleeing vehicle.

Milton, New Hampshire, police had chased the suspect from their community into the neighboring town of Acton, Maine, on Foxes Ridge Road, according to a statement from York County, Maine, Sheriff William L. King Jr.

The suspect’s vehicle was riding on flat tires after having driven over a spike mat in New Hampshire, King said.

At about 9:15 p.m., members of the Acton community tried to assist police by forming a roadblock with their vehicles.

One resident, Robert Sprague, 55, allegedly fired a shotgun at the fleeing vehicle, striking the trunk, King said.

“It is my understanding that Milton Police eventually arrested their suspect for eluding an officer,” King stated. “I did not identify the suspect because he is a victim in the Maine case.”

Sprague was arrested and charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, according to King.

The Class C crime is  punishable by up to five years incarceration and a $5,000 fine.

Sprague was transported to York County Jail where he posted $2,000 bail, according to King. He is scheduled to appear at the York Judicial Center in Biddeford on Nov. 26, 2024.
