A covered bridge will be closed for months after a truck fell through the structure last week.

The Maine Department of Transportation says the bridge will be closed to traffic until spring, after engineers found some beams were damaged when a truck fell through the bridge deck August 23.

"The repair work can be accomplished by MaineDOT crews, but the lumber will need to be milled specifically to match the species and dimensions of the lumber on the bridge. Procuring the materials is expected to take several months, meaning construction is unlikely to happen until the spring," MaineDOT announced in a news release. "MaineDOT does not have an estimated repair cost at this time."

The Babb’s Bridge spans the Presumpscot River between the towns of Gorham and Windham

On August 23, a Ford F-750 was hauling a load of crushed gravel when it attempted to cross the bridge, according to Gorham police. Police say the weight of the truck with the gravel was several times heavier than the posted weight of the bridge, causing the deck to collapse and the truck to fall through to the river below.

The driver was able to free himself but sustained minor injuries, according to police.

According to the Department of Transportation, Babb’s Bridge was originally built in 1840 and was one of the state’s oldest covered bridges until it was burned by vandals in 1973.

A replica was then built using wood from Gorham and re-opened in 1976.

The bridge was also subjected to vandalism in 2014 when vandals cut holes in the roof.

The bridge was closed for repairs for months in 2015 after it was damaged by a snowplow.

Transportation officials say roughly 360 vehicles travel across the covered bridge on an average day.
