The body of a kayaker reported missing was recovered Saturday night off Bar Harbor.

The kayaker left from a residence at 4:30 p.m. but never returned, according to a news release from the Coast Guard, which was alerted at about 8 p.m.

After a two-hour search involving a Coast Guard boat and helicopter, members of the National Park Service found the kayaker who was wearing a lifejacket but unresponsive.

Park Service personnel transferred the kayaker to the Coast Guard boat, whose crew attempted resuscitation, according to the release. However, the kayaker was pronounced dead by emergency personnel on the shore.

The Department of Marine Resources identified the kayaker as  Dennis Webber, 73, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, according to the Portland Press Herald.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the family,” said Capt. Matt Baker, commander of Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. “We are grateful for the dedication of the federal, state, and local agencies who contributed to this search effort.”

Maine Marine Patrol assisted with the search.
