The body of an Augusta man wanted by police since Friday was discovered this morning in the Kennebec River, officials say.

Justin M. Larrabee, 40, had assaulted his parents on July 5, police said. He had been considered armed and dangerous, and police had locked down the Riverside Drive area for hours during last week’s search.

At about 11:30 a.m. this morning, police responded to a report of a body near the base of the Cushnoc Crossing Bridge, which carries Route 3 traffic over the Kennebec River.

“Officers were eventually able to recover and positively identify the male as Justin M. Larrabee,” a press release from Augusta police stated.

Larrabee’s family was notified after his identity was confirmed, police said.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends,” the release states.

Augusta police responded at 1 p.m. Friday, July 5, to 480 Riverside Drive for a report of a domestic assault.

Police say Larrabee displayed a firearm, made threats against his family and then he fled. His vehicle was located a short time later.

Police closed off the area during their search. Riverside Drive was reopened to motorists at 2 a.m. Saturday and a shelter-in-place order was lifted.

Police had requested the public’s help during the search but warned against approaching Larrabee.

The Kennebec Journal reported that Larrabee is the same person charged with defacing Augusta’s police memorial over the 2023 Memorial Day weekend.
