A South Portland man is facing charges after allegedly being involved in a fatal collision in Gray on Saturday, July 6.

First responders were called to a head-on collision at the intersection of Portland and Sugar Maple roads shortly before 11:30 p.m., according to a news release from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

“Upon arrival of Emergency Responders and subsequent investigation, it was determined that Jean Nshimiyimana, 43, of South Portland was operating a 2022 Jeep Gladiator and crashed into a 2019 Chevrolet Suburban that was traveling in the opposite direction,” the release stated.

The Suburban’s driver died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash, according to the release. Two juvenile passengers in the Suburban were transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police has identified the deceased as Daniel Fackrell, 50, of Cumberland.

Nshimiyimana was arrested for manslaughter and operating under the influence, according to the release. He is being held at Cumberland County jail and more charges are “likely forthcoming,” according to the release.

Portland Road was closed for hours while police investigated. Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the cause of the crash.

The state’s chief medical examiner is investigating the cause of death.

“Speed and alcohol do appear to be factors in the cause of the crash,” the release states.

Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Gray Fire Department, Cumberland Police Department and Windham Police Department responded at the scene.
