A small plane bound for Portsmouth, New Hampshire, made an emergency landing on a road in Hollis Wednesday after the pilot ran out of fuel.

York County Sheriff Bill King said deputies responded to Killick Pond Road at about 2 p.m. A blue and white Cessna model 180, King said, had landed on the road near the Poland Springs building and taxied onto the grass.

“The guy ran out of gas, and he had to put it down,” King said of the pilot, Joseph Bowen, 57, of Norway.

The road is mostly used as an access road to the Poland Spring Property, and there was no traffic on it at the time, King said.

No one was hurt, and police are not planning to charge Bowen, King said, but the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.

Initially, King said, deputies were prepared to allow Bowen to refuel the plane and take off again, but the FAA would not allow it.

“They made him disassemble it and put it on a flatbed and take it out of there,” King said.
