AUGUSTA — Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said Wednesday her office is review a new executive order from President Donald Trump that seeks to require voters to show proof they are U.S. citizens before they can register to vote in federal elections.

Bellows said Wednesday that the Constitution already requires voters to be citizens to participate in state and federal elections.

“It’s already a requirement that there be citizenship,” she said Wednesday shortly after announcing her run for governor in Augusta. “The details that the president put forward yesterday may in fact be unconstitutional because he’s requiring certain requirements for forms.”

Bellows said her office is looking into the details of Trump’s order, which would require certain types of documents that many people don’t have readily available, according to the Associated Press.

Bellows said she may release a more detailed statement on the issue later in the week.

“It’s really important to recognize that under the United States Constitution and federalism, elections are run by the states and only Congress can pass federal election laws,” she said.
