AUGUSTA — A poll released this week shows a major divide between Maine’s political parties when it comes to whether President Donald Trump is doing a good job.

Results show 98% of Republicans approve of Trump’s performance as president, with only 1% of Democrats and 36% of independents judging him the same way, according to the University of New Hampshire Survey Center Pine Tree State Poll.

The results are based on a survey of 855 people online between Feb. 13 and Feb. 17. The margin of error is 3.4 percentage points.

“President Donald Trump enjoys nearly unanimous approval of his handling of the economy, foreign policy, and his overall job performance among Maine Republicans, but Democrats strongly disagree,” the pollsters wrote.

When it comes to Elon Musk’s involvement in the new administration, 54% of Mainers think it’s inappropriate, 38% think it is appropriate and 8% are unsure. But broken down by party, 87% of Republicans think his role is appropriate, 98% of Democrats think it is inappropriate and 73% of independents say it is inappropriate, according to the survey.

On Trump’s decision to pardon or commute the sentences of those convicted of crimes at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, 55% of Mainers somewhat or strongly disapprove, 40% strongly or somewhat approve and the rest did not express an opinion, according to the survey.

But when broken down by party, 84% of Republicans approve of the decision, 97% of Democrats disapprove and 61% of independents disapprove.

UNH asked respondents about another controversial pardon as well, querying opinions about former President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son Hunter and other family members. Only 27% strongly or somewhat approve of the decision, 61% strongly or somewhat oppose and 11% have no opinion.

By party, 94% of Republicans and 52% of independents disapprove, with only 31% of Democrats registering disapproval.

The survey center dug into some of Trump’s early executive orders, asking respondents what they think of ending birthright citizenship, renaming the Gulf of Mexico and withdrawing from the World Health Organization.

On birthright citizenship, 58% of Mainers are opposed and 54% are against renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Fifty-two percent oppose withdrawing from the WHO.

Overall, 40% of Mainers think the country is headed in the right direction, 56% think it is on the wrong track and 4% are unsure.

“Mainers are more optimistic about the direction of the country than at any point during the second half of Joe Biden’s term in office,” according to the pollsters.

When compared to residents of New Hampshire and Vermont, Mainers appear to be somewhere in the middle. On presidential approval, 48% of New Hampshire residents think Trump is doing a good job, 45% of Mainers agree and just 31% of Vermonters approve of his job so far as president.
