Students across 115 schools in Maine chose former Republican President Donald Trump as the winner in a student mock election.
The Maine Office of Secretary of State released the results Wednesday, one day after students voted at participating schools.
“Participating in a mock election is an excellent, hands-on way for students to learn about voting and our electoral system,” Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said in a statement. “Kudos to the Maine educators who make these lessons available and realistic for their students.”
Mock election results showed Trump with 52% of the vote, followed by Vice President Kamala Harris, who got just under 41%.
In the mock election race for U.S. Senate, the students chose Sen. Angus King, an independent, with 43% of the vote, followed by Republican Demi Kouzounas with 24%, independent Jason Cherry, with 16%, and Democrat David Costello with 15%.
In the 1st Congressional District, U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, a Democrat, got 41%, followed by Republican Ronald Russell at 38% and independent Ethan Alcorn at 19%, according to mock election results.
And in the hotly contested 2nd Congressional District, incumbent U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, a Democrat, edged out state Rep. Austin Theriault, R-Fort Kent, 49.3% to 48.8%, the mock election results showed.
