The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery stands to benefit from this year’s annual defense bill, which includes $68 million for the shipyard’s infrastructure.

The funding may be included in the 2025 Department of Defense Appropriations Act, according to Maine Sen. Susan Collins (R). The bill allocates funding for defense spending and often includes funding for local military production facilities like the shipyard.

Among other provisions, this year’s bill requires that the Navy “induct no fewer than 100 apprentices” at shipyards nationwide, including Kittery.

The bill also includes $1.4 billion for the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program. That includes $68 million specifically for infrastructure projects at the Kittery shipyard.

Another provision includes $578 million in parts for Virginia-class submarines, which includes parts to be made available to the Kittery shipyard.

“The skilled men and women at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard play an important role in maintaining our Navy fleet and enhancing our national security,” said Collins, who is vice chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and ranking member of the Defense Subcommittee. “It is critical that the Navy addresses the modernization needs at PNSY, and Committee passage of this legislation is an important step towards building on funding I have previously secured for such upgrades.”
