Gov. Janet Mills is ordering flags to be lowered to half-staff on Friday in remembrance of those who were killed Oct. 25, 2023 in the Lewiston mass shootings.

“As we mourn and pay tribute to the loved ones we lost one year ago, as we support those who were injured, and as we honor all those who have been affected by the Lewiston tragedy, we also remember our strength as a community, as a state, and as Maine people,” Mills said in a statement.

All U.S. and State of Maine flags are to be lowered on Friday, which marks one year since a gunman killed 18 people at a bowling alley and a bar in Lewiston.

The worst mass shooting in state history led to two days of regional lockdowns as police searched for the shooter, who was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Mills issued a proclamation to honor victims, families, survivors, the Deaf community, law enforcement, medical professionals and Maine people.

The proclamation describes statewide support for Lewiston, saying “we will continue to walk hand in hand along the road to healing, doing everything we can to support the victims’ families and the survivors of this tragedy.”

At 6 p.m. Friday at the Lewiston Colisee, a commemoration event will be held to honor those affected by the shootings. The program will include music, performances and remarks. Attendees are invited to bring small items, messages or keepsakes as part of efforts to create a permanent memorial.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Parking will be limited, so attendees are encouraged to park in the Southern Gateway or Oak Street parking garages and ride a free shuttle to the event.
