A multifaith prayer service is set for Tuesday in Augusta to mark the beginning of the month in which the Lewiston mass shootings occurred one year ago.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony outside the State House described as “a time of solemn remembrance that will also include expressions of steadfast hope.”

The Maine Council of Churches, the Maine Conference of the United Church of Christ and Multifaith Justice Maine is organizing the event. It which will feature the heads of seven denominations, three representatives of other faith traditions and an ASL interpreter, according to a press release from the council.

The event will include the reading of the names of the 18 people who were killed by a gunman at a bowling alley and a bar on Oct. 25, 2023. There will be songs, litanies, prayers and a time for silent reflection.

“The title of this service is ‘We remember, we grieve, we heal….together,’” said the Rev. Marisa Laviola, conference minister for the United Church of Christ in Maine. “The words ‘we’ and ‘together’ are essential because in the aftermath of a tragedy like the mass shooting, we find comfort, strength, courage and hope by coming together.”

On Oct. 25 in Lewiston, an event is planned at the Colisee to honor all who were impacted by the tragedy, including first responders and those who are helping others recover. The event is hosted by the One Lewiston Resilience Fund Committee, the City of Lewiston, Maine Resilience Center and the LA Metro Chamber of Commerce.

The schedule includes music, performances, remarks and a chance for the public to give input on the development of a permanent memorial.

Doors open at 5 p.m. with the program beginning at 6 p.m.

On Tuesday, the event in Augusta is set for 10 a.m. in the outdoor plaza between the Cross Building and the State House.

The service will end with the signing of “We Shall Overcome,” which organizers describe as an acknowledgment of grief and pain and a proclamation that “we shall overcome someday.”
