It’s early in the 2024 foliage season for Maine, but some colors are already visible, especially in northern parts of the state.
The newest foliage report, produced by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, indicates “moderate” colors in northern parts of the state, including northern portions of Aroostook, Penobscot, Piscataquis and Somerset counties.
“With the autumn equinox on Sunday, September 22, we bid farewell to summer and welcome cooler, fall-like temperatures, which will accelerate the vibrant color transformation across Maine’s stunning landscape,” said Gale Ross, who tracks fall colors for the department. “It’s the perfect time to start planning your outdoor adventures for the coming weeks, enjoying the crisp weather and vivid fall hues.”
Northern regions of the state should be seeing peak fall colors by the end of September into the first week of October.
Large portions of the state are expected to see peak fall colors throughout October, with peak colors reaching southern and coastal areas by the end of October.
For now, though, the department recommends viewing in northern Maine, with the next region expected to see peak colors being the Maine Highlands, home to Moosehead Lake and Mount Katahdin.
