Nearly 40 communities across Maine will receive storm recovery grants.
Gov. Janet Mills announced Friday that $25.2 million in grants will help communities recover from last year’s winter storms while upgrading infrastructure to prepare for severe weather.
The grants come from the Maine Infrastructure Adaption Fund, a program created by the governor and legislators in 2021.
The grant is funded from $60 million in state funding that both parties approved as part of the supplemental budget in May.
The money will pay to upgrade culverts and make improvements to communities to lessen the impact of intense storms and flooding.
Communities that may benefit include:
- Lewiston: The city received $200,000, which will be used to replace two corrugated metal pipe culverts along River Road to withstand heavy water flow.
- Norridgewock: The Norridgewock Water District received $1.05 million that will be used to enhance the water transmission that provides water for the town.
- Portland: The city received $3.6 million to strengthen infrastructure in the Old Port and better drainage along the city’s waterfront.
