A hot air balloon festival that draws thousands and brings in millions of dollars to the Lewiston-Auburn area has been canceled.
The Great Falls Balloon Festival’s directors announced Wednesday the event is being canceled due to a series of challenges and unforeseen circumstances that include logistical issues, safety concerns and other unexpected factors beyond their control.
“This decision was not made lightly,” the board stated on Facebook. “We understand the disappointment this news will bring to our community, sponsors, volunteers, and participants who have eagerly anticipated this event.”
According to their post on Facebook, the festival – an annual event for nearly 30 years -- attracts 100,000 visitors across the region, bringing $2 million in economic impact to the area.
“We were upset along with some of the others to hear that news today,” Shanna Cox, CEO of the Lewiston-Auburn Chamber of Commercem said. “We know the Great Falls Balloon Festival has significant economic impact to our restaurants and our lodging all across Androscoggin County.”
“The city of Auburn finds it unfortunate that the balloon festival is being canceled,” Auburn Mayor Jeffrey Harmon said. “We understand the challenges the committee has been facing. We’re hoping that they’ll be able to host the balloon festival starting next year."
Sponsors for this year’s event will have their monetary support returned, according to the post.
“We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors and volunteers,” the post stated. “Your unwavering support and dedication are the backbone of the Balloon Festival.”
