Mainers may not get a chance to weigh-in on the design of a new state flag until 2026, following recent House and Senate votes.

Both chambers supported LD 471, which seeks to create a commission to design a new flag and ask voters if they approve.

For years, there’s been a movement in Maine to go back to the former state flag that featured a beige background with a pine tree and a star. Since 1909, the blue flag with a farmer and a fisherman has been recognized as the official state flag.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Maureen Terry (D-Gorham) proposes to establish a five-member commission to help the Secretary of State’s Office design a new flag.

Then in November 2026, Maine voters would have the final say.

The bill needs additional votes in the House and Senate.
